In 1991, the Ann Arbor Concert Band established a scholarship competition for high school students who are outstanding wind or percussion instrumentalists. The winner of the award received a $1,000 scholarship as well as the opportunity to perform with the band at the final concert of the season. The generosity of Dave Juillet, who passed away in 1994, made the first awards possible. In July 1993, the family of Andrew Lum, a promising musician and football player at Huron High, and his mentor Dave Juillet established the Andrew J. Lum Young Artist Scholarship Fund in his memory. The award perpetuates his high standards of excellence through hard work, determination, personal dedication and enthusiasm for music.

competition rules

  1. To be eligible to compete for this scholarship, the applicant must be a high school wind or percussion instrumentalist who lives in the State of Michigan. If a finalist has immediate family, or close friends or private instructor who is/are members is Ann Arbor Concert Band, let Barb Shaltis know.

  2. Applicants must prepare a solo piece that will be performed with the band at the May 13, 2012 AACB concert if the applicant is selected. The solo must be available with band accompaniment that can be borrowed, rented or purchased by AACB. Please contact Barb Shaltis if you are having difficulty locating an appropriate solo. We appreciate any information you might have regarding where AACB can rent, borrow or purchase the band accompaniment for your solo.

  3. Applicants must submit the application form plus a pre-audition CD to ANN ARBOR CONCERT BAND, c/o Barbara Shaltis, 499 Morris Drive, Jackson, MI 49201 by February 1, 2012. Audition CDs will be reviewed by the AACB Board and conductor to determine the finalists' eligibility for the live auditions. The CD must be the work to be performed at the May concert. We strongly recommend that the audition CD performance include piano accompaniment, as this demonstrates the ability to play in tune with another instrument. The CD must be clearly marked with the soloist's name and title of the work.

  4. Finalists selected from the auditions CDs will be invited to perform with piano accompaniment at a live audition. For the live audition, soloists must furnish their own pianist. The audition solo must also be the piece to be played with the band at the May concert. If you cannot find a pianist, contact Barb Shaltis as quickly as possible.

  5. Live auditions will be heard by a panel of judges. The finalists will be notified of the audition time and place, and all contestants are scheduled on the same day. The auditions normally take place on February 27 between 6-7:30 p.m. All finalists will be notified of the judges’ decision by phone or e-mail and confirmed with a letter. The decision of the panel is final. The panel reserves the right to withhold the award if none of the applicants are deemed meritorious.

  6. The winner will receive a $1000 award from the Andrew J Lum and David R. Juillet Young Artist Scholarship Fund and will be required to perform the audition solo at the Ann Arbor Concert Band's May 13, 2012 concert. A runner-up will be selected and named at the same time as the designation of the winner. If the winner can't fulfill the obligations, the runner-up will then receive the scholarship and appear with the AACB.

  7. The award must be used for post high-school education or to further music education. The scholarship award will be paid, on behalf of the recipient, directly to a 501(c)(3) institution/organization (college, university, non-profit music camp, etc.). The recipient will have the responsibility for notifying the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation of his/her designation and will be given information for that purpose.
